Smart spaces refer to any type of environment (e.g., homes, offices, hospitals, schools) that is equipped with variety of devices, sensors, and actuators that cooperate to provide its users with convenience, safety, security, and comfort. Smart spaces have been always viewed as a luxurious feature. However, business models developed for smart environments show an increasing potential for the adoption of smart spaces to improve the quality and even save people’s lives. In a smart hospital scenario, for example, RFID tags can be attached to patients, drug packages, and medical equipment. Physicians and nurses can access patients’ medical records saved on their RFID tags when necessary via their handheld devices equipped with RFID readers. Through this identification, correct operations can be ensured to the correct patient. Medical equipment can be tracked and secured from being stolen.

Model-driven Development (MDD) is an approach that represents the software development life-cycle as a modeling and model transformation activities. Models help developers to cope with large and complex systems by allowing them to deal with high level concepts at the right level of abstraction. As a result, the focus of development is moved from writing code for a specific platform to developing an effective solution to satisfy the business needs. Models are used to automate much of the actual coding of applications by generating parts of the Platform Specific Model (PSM) from the Platform Independent Model (PIM) and the actual code from the PSM (to be elaborated later in this tutorial). This way, models are used to drive the code (and not the other way around), keeping the consistency between the model and what the system actually does. MDD gives architects the ability to define and communicate a solution while creating artifacts that become part of the overall solution. Read More

  • Risk-Based Security and Self-Protection Google Cloud Messaging for Android (GCM) is a service that allows you to send data from your server to the users' Android-powered device. This could be a lightweight message telling your app there is new data to be fetched from the server like new version of apps or something like that [1]. The GCM service handles all aspects of storing, queuing and delivery of messages to the target Android application running on the target device. It is a completely free service whatever your messaging needs are. Google Cloud Messaging technology is the new version of the C2DM (cloud to device messaging) technology as the C2DM service has been officially deprecated as of June 26, 2012 which means that C2DM has stopped accepting new users and quota requests. The GCM could be considered as a more efficient implementation of the C2DM technology. Read More
